Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Appreciate the significance and contribution of aquaculture to food security as one of the fast growing food producing sectors, its history, status and trends in Papua New Guinea and in the world.

2. Understand the fundamentals and concepts of aquaculture and principles of fish production, and

3. Identify the different characteristics of cultivable species (fresh, brackish and marine waters), rearing media (ponds, cages, pens and tanks), types of culture systems (operation and management), water parameters and feeds and feeding and harvesting, processing and marketing techniques.

Syllabus:

Significance and contribution of aquaculture, history, status and trends in PNG and in the world; Fundamentals and concepts of aquaculture and principles of fish production; Characteristics of different cultivable species (fresh, brackish and marine waters), rearing media for aquaculture systems (such as ponds, cages, pens and tanks) types; Operations and management of culture systems, water parameters, feeds and feeding, harvesting, processing and marketing techniques.
