Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the factors that affect productivity and efficiency in the main species of animals;
2. Learn the husbandry of these species;
3. Impart practical knowledge of how a commercial animal enterprise is planned and operated;
4. Outline the main animal products, the processes and factors involved in producing good quality products and by-products from animals;
5. Outline the important role of animals in agriculture and how animals can be integrated into a sustainable system involving crops and other land use practices.
Components of animal production systems and their influence on productivity and efficiency in animals; Aspects of the growth, development and productive processes in domestic animals with special reference to the efficiency of production and adaptation to the environment; The husbandry of cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, goats, rabbits and buffaloes, mating behaviour, dam-offspring relationships and the care of the neonates; Product harvesting and quality aspects; A brief discussion on the husbandry of work animals; Emphasis will be given to the role of livestock in the present and future development of PNG and to the integration of animals into mixed farming systems.
